Abstract. Punishment in the form of imprisonment traditionally refers to the most problematic form of social activity. One of the main problems in the specialized literature is the quality of work of correctional officers. As a rule, researchers point out that this problem is mainly departmental in nature and the duty to resolve it lies solely with the Federal Penitentiary Service. The author of the proposed article does not agree with this kind of statement. This is due to the fact that employees of the penal enforcement system come to it from our society, therefore, bear in their subjective attitude to punishment in the form of imprisonment those ideas that society broadcasts. Using his personal experience of working in a correctional institution, the author attempted to interview employees of the junior inspectors of correctional colonies from among those who joined the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The survey was conducted in the form of an informal interview in the period 2020–2023 (N = 52). The author suggests that the degree of reliability of the respondents’ answers can be assessed as high — they lost touch with the penal enforcement system, which allowed them to be as sincere as possible in their answers. Against the background of a rather large shortage among the junior inspectors of the security departments of correctional colonies, the transfer of these employees to another law enforcement agency looks paradoxical. It is this category that bears the main burden in the correctional institution for ensuring the regime of detention, and after serving for three years or more, they do not consider it possible to remain in the system. The survey showed that the majority of respondents have a poor idea of what a custodial sentence is, what its goals are, the mechanisms for achieving them, and the means of implementation.
