Abstract. The problem of determining the correctional potential of punishment in the form of imprisonment has a rather long history. At the same time, after many decades, the penitentiary field of various branches of scientific knowledge remains one of the most difficult. In particular, most experts note the problem of access to the necessary empirical base. In addition, the object of specific penitentiary educational and preventive impact is considered as the most difficult from the point of view of its life experience. Given that this experience is usually characterized as extremely negative, the problems of the methodological approach are traditionally relevant. The «heyday» of Russian penitentiary science occurred during the Soviet period. That is why, as the author of the article notes, the concept of dialectical materialism was defined as a methodological principle. Despite the fact that in the modern period many authors are skeptical about this method, it is still worth noting that it was on it that the domestic system of theoretical and methodological foundations of penitentiary (correctional labor) prevention was built. Based on the works of Russian penitentiaries of the Soviet period, the author tries to substantiate the definition of the process of penitentiary prevention through related branches of knowledge — penitentiary pedagogy and psychology. The peculiarity in the formation of the scientific foundations of penitentiary prevention is determined by social processes in which the convict must take part in addition to his desire. The imperative nature of the punishment in the form of imprisonment creates additional difficulties in the implementation of the punishment in the form of imprisonment. The convict, on the one hand, is perceived as a person, and on the other, as an object of specific (penitentiary) educational and preventive influence.
