Abstract. Modern Russian society, which is at the stage of its formation, is facing various socio-political challenges. Perhaps this can be regarded as a kind of permanent state of our society in recent centuries. However, taking into account the changed information space system, these processes have acquired a completely different content. The authors of the article addressed a rather complex topic, the importance of which for modern Russian society is difficult to overestimate. In particular, the article notes that «citizenship» and «patriotism» as socio-political categories determine the socio-cultural content of life not only of an individual, but also of the whole society. One of the experts in this field is Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor Alexander Grigorievich Masalov. His seventieth birthday is being actively celebrated this year. This article is one of a series of publications dedicated to this anniversary. The authors of the article conducted an analysis of publications on the topic in question in the Russian scientific segment. During the analysis, it was found that the main obstacle in developing a unified understanding of «citizenship» and «patriotism» in modern conditions is the lack of a unified understanding of the nature of those forms and methods of youth education that took place in the pre-Soviet and Soviet periods. The article discusses theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of «citizenship» and «patriotism» in different periods of national and world history. A critical analysis of modern forms of citizenship and patriotism in Russia has been conducted. As a result, the authors state a decrease in the quality of civic and patriotic education in our country.

Keywords: citizenship; patriotism; forms of manifestations of citizenship and patriotism; modern model of Russian citizenship and patriotism; patriot; public consciousness; Soviet patriotism; unified model of Russian citizenship and patriotism; system of civic and patriotic education and upbringing
