Abstract. It is customary to consider punishment in the form of imprisonment as one of the most severe forms of state coercion against persons who have committed crimes. The basis of this state coercion is the isolation of convicts from society. The closed nature of the activities of institutions of the penal system contributes to the formation of a specific social education — the «penitentiary society». Such a situation in penitentiary sociology and criminology is traditionally considered as a kind of contradiction between the goals that the state sets before punishment in the form of imprisonment and its practical implementation. The author of the article focuses on the fact that, being isolated from society, convicts should be subjected to a specific (penitentiary) effect — «penitentiary prevention». The specific nature of the conditions of execution of imprisonment imposes a certain «imprint» on the nature of the educational and preventive impact on convicts. In particular, the author of the article defines that the implementation of this type of social activity can be carried out in two independent forms of organization — formal and informal. Organizational problems also «dictate2 specific forms of influence on convicts in closed social education. First of all, this concerns the subjects of penitentiary prevention, classified according to their specialization. The main, specialized entity is the educational department of the correctional institution. By virtue of the functional duties assigned to him, he not only determines the set of necessary methods of influencing convicts, but also performs an organizational and managerial function to consolidate the activities of various subjects of penitentiary prevention. The judgments expressed by the author of the article are supported by the results of his own sociological research.
