Abstract. The article considers the main problems of higher education training of teaching staff, the discrepancy between the requirements of modern society for teacher competencies and the actual state of the educational process in pedagogical universities. Among them are outdated forms of organizing the educational process in higher education, the slow pace of digitalization of education, the lack of connection between the teaching of theoretical disciplines and the future professional practice of a teacher. The article presents the results of a survey of higher education graduates on the quality of professional education in universities. Emphasis is placed on the need to modernize the training of teaching staff in accordance with the new requirements of the digital school. The ways of solving the problems that have arisen in higher education are analyzed, the need for reforms in the organization of the educational process, for the high-quality use of interactive and digital technologies necessary for a student to adapt to a digital society and to implement the educational tasks of the school in his professional activities is substantiated. As a promising direction, practical orientation in the system of training teaching staff in higher education is highlighted, since at the moment there is a fact of insufficient readiness of a graduate of a pedagogical university for future activities. It is argued that a new systemic approach is required to the organization of students’ educational and industrial practices, starting from the first years of study at the university, to the construction of a system of scientific research activities. The article provides examples of successful experience in modernizing the education system of individual Russian universities, in particular, the Siberian Federal University, the Samara Social and Pedagogical University, and the Ishim State Pedagogical Institute. A conclusion is made about the need for further modernization of the professional training of future teachers with the introduction of existing successful practices.
