Abstract. Punishment in the form of imprisonment is traditionally considered as the most severe form of State coercion applied to persons who have committed crimes. Isolation from the society of criminals is considered as a condition for the formation of a specific closed (penitentiary) society. Its formation is impossible without a system of informal relations that arise in it, regardless of the goals that the state laid down when determining the nature of the implementation of punishment in the form of imprisonment. The author of the article draws attention to the fact that persons deprived of liberty and by the will of fate, who find themselves in a penitentiary society, are not the same as individuals. The consequence of this is their separation according to various informal criteria. In the specialized literature, the idea has been formed that the system of informal relations has clearly defined the categories of convicts who, by virtue of their criminal acts, belong to the category of «rejected». Without excluding such an approach in assessing the victim qualities of the personality of convicts, the author of the article draws attention to the fact that in modern conditions, informal norms defining the order of relations with convicts serving sentences for so-called «shameful articles» have undergone serious changes. In modern conditions, such qualities of convicts come to the fore, which can be considered victimized only in the specific conditions of penitentiary socialization. The victimization of a convicted person is determined based on his attitude to the informal norms of behavior practiced in the penitentiary society. This kind of methodological approach allows the penitentiary community to determine the personal qualities of a particular convict within the framework of social relations and processes in a closed (penitentiary) society. He supports the opinion expressed by the author of the article with the results of his own sociological research.
