Abstract. The use of punishment in the form of imprisonment is traditionally considered as the most severe form of state coercion against persons who have committed serious crimes. The isolation of convicts from society is considered as the main condition for the formation of a specific closed social education. Such a situation in penitentiary sociology and criminology is traditionally considered as a kind of specific contradiction between the goals that the state sets before punishment in the form of imprisonment and its practical implementation. The author of the article draws attention to the fact that persons deprived of liberty and by the will of fate, who find themselves in conditions of closed social education, should be subjected to a specific (penitentiary) effect — «penitentiary prevention». This scientific direction was formed for the first time during the existence of the Soviet state. However, after the collapse of this state, the problem of penitentiary prevention, as a specific form of influence on those sentenced to imprisonment, ceased to be in demand. The domestic system of punishment in the form of imprisonment faced the problem of physical «survival». The stabilization that has occurred in recent decades in the system of law enforcement practice of execution of punishment in the form of imprisonment has again made the scientific justification of penitentiary prevention in demand. This kind of methodological approach allows domestic specialists in the field of penitentiary sociology and criminology to determine the personal qualities of a particular convict within the framework of social relations and processes in conditions of specific social education. He supports the opinions expressed by the author of the article with the results of his own sociological research. Its results give grounds to assert that in modern conditions penitentiary prevention can be quite effective.
