Abstract. In the article, the author examines the content of the socio-psychological phenomenon of the legal consciousness of the individual as a rational element of civil society, the conceptual, volitional and semantic principle of decision-making by an individual, a member of civil society. The architectonics of the presentation of the material is based on the provisions of a fairly general theory of management, the correlation of basic categories, so they characterize the environment of functioning of civil society and the participation of an individual in it as a bearer of legal awareness in real time. The author connects the characteristics of civil society with the concept of «rule of law», which made it possible to consider the phenomenon under study in legal and socio-political contexts, identify its main features and reveal their content. When analyzing the signs of civil society, the characteristic of the principle of equality of its members is given in the context of the existence of a modern social organization in the capitalist paradigm of life. Equality is considered in three contexts: social, political and legal. The legal consciousness of the individual is studied in relation to the concepts of «worldview», «legal mentality», «legal culture», which for each other are different and complementary characteristics of the individual’s consciousness. The phenomenon under study represents specialized ideological attitudes, scientific ideas and theories that substantiate them, formed in the process of socialization of a person, which, depending on the individual psychological components of human consciousness in practical life, reflect value judgments about socio-political and legal phenomena. Further, the author concludes that legal awareness is a rational element of civil society, since it exists inseparably from a person, and is directly responsible for making decisions in real time and social space. It underlies the mechanism of formation of civil society, the existence of which is directly related to its level.
