Abstract. The problem of crime prevention has always been very acute. Therefore, the obvious relevance of research in this area was considered as key knowledge in the field of legal institutions regulating specific public relations. Here, it is important to understand that knowledge of the fundamental factors influencing the reduction of crime has a positive impact on the development of any public education. The proposed article examines the essential aspects of those social relations that are defined in Russian criminological science as crime prevention. The author justifiably makes an effort to abandon the notion that has developed in recent years in our science that it is necessary to consider prevention and prevention of crimes as synonymous concepts. Such a confusion of concepts is unlikely to have a positive impact on the formation of scientific ideas about a particular socio-legal phenomenon. It is important to understand that preventive measures aimed at eliminating the causes and conditions of illegal behavior of people are primarily of a general social nature. Its criminological component can manifest itself only when it is determined by certain criminogenic factors. Otherwise, the author of the article notes, such measures can hardly be considered criminological (in the «narrow» meaning of this concept). Criminogenic determination begins to be traced only when the social mechanisms regulating specific social relations begin to lose their effectiveness. For a more effective implementation of the goals and objectives of crime prevention in a State governed by the rule of law, it is necessary to maintain a certain level of citizens’ legal awareness, which makes it possible to specify those preventive measures that are being implemented in the fight against crime.
